The spectacular growing season for lilies last for about four months - or more - beginning in the late spring.
The Asiatic Lily is the first to show it’s magnificent colors to the world with bright dazzling
colors in reds, pale pastels, oranges, as well as some unbelievable two-toned blossoms. The Asiatic lilies do not offer much
fragrance but they are very easy to grow and inexpensive. The Aurelian lilies offer more fragrance as well as exotic blossoms
and unparalleled beauty.
You can grow your lilies from bulbs planted - more commonly
- in the early fall or in the spring.
Black Beauty - When the Black Beauty is mature, there is a bouquet of soon to blossom buds that open
a few at a time to give a colorful flower show that lasts for three weeks or more.
The Show Begins
in - July into August Expected Maximum Height - Five feet
Elegant Lady - The trumpet shaped Elegant Lady is a relatively new plant that can proudly claim
the Easter Lily as a parent. The beautiful elegant petals are a translucent pale pink color that fade to almost white
at the center.
Color Show Begins
in - June Expected Maximum Height - Three feet
Gold Eagle - You can recognize the Gold Eagle by the huge leaves that are seemingly sprinkled with
crimson dust near the center of each wide petal. Because this Lily is so large and heavy, stakes are sometimes needed to hold
the plant in place.
Color Show Begins
in - June Expected Maximum Height - Six feet
Siberia - The fragrant frosty Siberia is very heat tolerant and the petals are secure on sturdy stems.
The petals are long-lasting and absolutely stunning.
Color Show Begins
in - July Expected Maximum Height - Four Feet
Tristar - The star shaped Tristar is identified by the beautiful silvery stripe that goes down the cent
of each petal. The Tristar is in the group of hybrids known for their awesome range of colors, hardiness and it’s
predictable reliability.
Color Show Begins in
- June Expected Maximum Height - Three feet
Uchida - The Uchida was at one time the favorite of florists but it’s popularity is shadowed by many new
varieties of the Lily that are now available.
Color Show Begins in
- August to September Expected Maximum Height - Four feet
The lilies that you plant in your garden will give you
a spectacular show of colors and some varieties will give you a fragrance that you will never forget.
When you purchase your Oriental Hybrid Lilies,
you should plant them as soon as possible in rich soil that has an adequate drainage
system. If you have clay-like soil, you should add some organic matter to give your lilies the type of environment that will
ensure growth. Your lilies need at least six hours of direct sunlight and partial shade during the afternoon hours so that
the blooms will last longer.
A layer of mulch -especially during the winter months
for northern states - will help to keep the soil cool in the summer months and gives it an even moisture level.
Southern growers of lilies will need to expose their
plant in the winter so that the plants will return year after year.
Mix your lilies with other blooming flowers
or plants to give your garden a dramatic flair that you can enjoy during
